Itinerary

Day 1 - Darwin to Mary River

Depart Darwin to head to Litchfield National Park. Quick stop to check out the bizarre looking Magnetic termite mounds. Chance to have a swim at Buley Rockhole. This pretty little water hole area is surrounded by bush land. We also have time to take a swim at Florence Falls. A shaded spot to relax in, surrounded by the beautiful monsoonal rainforest. In the afternoon we take drive to get to the Crocodile cruise. A great opportunity to view crocodiles in their natural habitat. Don't forget to take your camera. Overnight camp at Point Stuart.  (L,D)

Day 2 - Mary River to Kakadu National Park

We head to Kakadu National Park. Early in the morning we stop to see the birdlife at the Mamukala Wetlands (seasonal). We visit the Bowali, the main visitor centre in Kakadu National Park. There is time to check out the informative displays here. Then on to see some incredible Aboriginal rock art. Your guide will provide informative talks about Aboriginal art and culture. Nest stop is Gubara Pools. We then take a 6km return walk past the sandstone cliffs to a monsoon forest. It is possible to swim here once the wet season rains has topped up the pools again. Overnight camp in Kakadu National Park.  (B.L,D)

Day 3 - Kakadu National Park to Darwin

An early start to get the southern end of Kakadu National Park. Approx 7.5km walk through open woodlands to Motor Car Falls. Then a scramble over large boulders to get to the plunge pool of the falls. The track that you walk along used to be the original service road, so the falls are named after it. Next stop is Boulder Creek. Then take a short 2km return walk to Boulder Creek. First crossing the swaying bridge, then take a short 1km walk through woodlands. Although these are small pools, by now you will be ready for another refreshing dip. Return to Darwin. Stay overnight at dorm accommodation in Darwin.   (B,L)

Day 4 - Darwin to Katherine

Leaving Darwin we travel south through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips en route to Adelaide River. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940's. Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim. After lunch (available for purchase) we join a 2 hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge (seasonal) in Nitmiluk National Park, with a chance to see fresh water crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river.

Our tour of the first two gorges takes us past sheer rock walls and requires a short walk to reach the second gorge. Enjoy a brief tour of Katherine, the third largest town in the Territory and hub of the region's cattle and farming industries. Travel via Pine Creek where we see old chinese diggings and historical buildings, before an evening stop is made at Adelaide River where you may purchase dinner (own expense). You may like to sample the famous 'Barra and Chips', before returning to Darwin.(L,D)
