Overview

This 7 day Cape York fly /drive camping safari explores one of Australia's last great wilderness regions - a land of history and ancient culture, crystal clear spring-fed creeks, huge termite mounds, and a vast and amazing variety of natural landscapes, including Iron Range National Park.

Day 1 - Great Barrier Reef

Fly over the Great Barrier Reef to Cape York. Visit the Lockerbie Scrub before taking an emotional walk to the very top of Australia, CAPE YORK! Camp on the tropical shores of Torres Strait. (LD)

Day 2 -Fruit Bat Falls

South to Fruit Bat Falls for lunch and a refreshing swim. Continue through Cape York’s unique wilderness to our overnight camp. (BLD)

Day 3 -Iron Range National Park

4WD Touring

Across the Wenlock and Pascoe Rivers (conditions permitting) to fabulous Iron Range National Park, Australia’s largest remaining area of tropical lowland rainforest. The area is renown for its bird life and wildlife; Eclectus Parrots, Palm Cockatoos, Magnificent Rifle Birds, Green (Condra) Pythons and Spotted Cuscus to name just a few. We camp at Chili Beach on the Coral Sea’s shore tonight. (BLD)

Day 4 -Archer River

We visit the tiny outpost of Portland Roads before returning to see other secrets hidden in the Iron Range rainforest. We leave the National Park through Tozers Gap and travel on to visit the historic Batavia gold fields. Onward to Archer River where we camp tonight. (BLD)

Day 5 -Lakefield National Park

Cape York

South to Coen and Musgrave and on to explore Lakefield National Park’s water lily covered billabongs, wildlife and bird life. We camp in Lakefield National Park tonight. (BLD)

Day 6 -Cooktown

A visit to Old Laura Homestead, then travel on the Battle Camp Road, once used by the Palmer River gold rush diggers, to historic Cooktown where you can walk in Captain Cook’s footsteps. We camp near Cooktown tonight. (BLD)

Day 7 - Black Mountain

Eerie Black Mountain this morning and the Lion’s Den Hotel. Now the Bloomfield Track and Cape Tribulation (weather permitting) and the World Heritage listed Daintree rainforest. Nearing the end we cross the Daintree River by cable ferry and continue on to Cairns ending your fascinating adventure of discovery and fun in Cape York. (LD)

Camping Safaris: Meals as coded, twin-share safari tent, self-inflating 100mm thick mattress and fitted bottom sheet, guided tours and entry fees as specified in itinerary, National Parks and Aboriginal Site fees.

What to Wear and Bring

Camping Safaris: Casual clothing is a must to be both comfortable and practical and you’ll need 4 or 5 changes. It is possible to wash clothes periodically. Something warm to wear in the evenings and to sleep in (a tracksuit is ideal) as it can get cold at night away from the coast. Footwear with good ankle support and sole tread are required, and a pair of sandals/thongs. Binoculars, camera, plenty of film and spare batteries. Personal toiletries, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, swimwear, towel and insect repellent. A water bottle and torch per person is essential. Campers may use their own sleeping bag or hire one of ours for $25. A small pillow (foam or inflatable) is recommended.
