Overview

Mt Wellington DescentThe Mt Wellington Descent is a flagship product and has taken thousands of people down famous Mt Wellington on a bike.

Guests depart Hobart (hotel pick-ups) and are transferred 21km by van to the summit of Mount Wellington. Rising to a height of 1270 metres, Mt Wellington is a spectacular and panoramic backdrop for the city of Hobart. From the top you can see for miles and miles up the Derwent Valley, down to the Southern Ocean and across to Port Arthur. The inlets, bays and hills of this beautiful city are spread out in a stunning panorama, detailed at the lookout at the summit.

Guides fit guests with a helmet and gloves followed by a detailed safety and rules briefing. After a practice ride at the summit, the group then follows the guide on a downhill descent of the mountain. Guests enjoy watching the alpine terrain gradually being replaced by a magnificent forest and stop on several occasions to take in the varying views and snap a picture or two.

The winding mountain road takes you down to the foothills where guests can choose to experience the thrill of the off-road section under strict guidance and instruction. The off-road section rejoins at Cascade Gardens where everyone enjoys a quick snack. Finish the 21km cycling trip after riding through the outer suburbs of South Hobart and Battery Point and complete the journey in Salamanca Place on the waterfront of Hobart.

Equipment

We use mountain bikes available in a range of sizes to suit different heights and requirements. It is law to wear a helmet in Australia, so we provide helmets of varying sizes for our guests as well and require them to be worn at all times on the bike. The bikes have a range of gears, good brakes, and flat pedals that do not require any special clothing or footwear.

Fitness

These fun experiences are aimed at travellers of no specific fitness level. As long as participants have the ability to balance, and can hold on and point the bike in the right direction, there shouldn’t be any problem.

What to wear

We recommend participants wear something warm for the summit, but wear layers underneath as it warms up quickly once we are off the mountain. Sneakers are great shoes to wear as are hiking/walking shoes. Open toed sandals are not recommended for the bike ride.

Safety

We do everything we can to ensure the safety of our groups. We place our riding guide at the front of the group to control the speed, and the driving guide follows in the van at the rear with the hazard lights flashing and a sign on the van or the rear of the trailer with “Caution Cyclists Ahead”. Our riding guides wear high visibility vests to be noticeable by both motorists and participants.

Indemnity and waiver form

Must be signed at the commencement of each trip or we cannot allow passengers to undertake the activity. Indemnity forms will be supplied on pick up in Hobart.
